Importing power stations: documents, transport and market rules

Most first-time buyers are surprised by one thing: a power station is not shipped like a normal product. It is a class 9 dangerous good, it will not fly, and it needs paperwork that follows the goods from the factory to your warehouse. Here is the whole picture, so your first order does not sit at a port.

1. The documents that travel with every shipment

2. Sea freight or air freight?

Sea freight — the normal route

UN3480 class 9 dangerous goods, FCL or LCL from Shenzhen or Ningbo. Cheapest per kilogram, accepts any capacity, 15–40 days depending on the destination port. Every unit ships at or below 30% state of charge.

Air freight — the exception

Cargo aircraft only, preparation and documentation far stricter, and not permitted at all for standalone lithium batteries above 100 Wh. Use it for samples and small units below 100 Wh, not for a container of 2560 Wh stations.

If your market needs stock fast, split the order: a small air shipment of sample or hero units below 100 Wh to validate the range, plus the main volume by sea.

3. Labelling and marking

The watt-hour rating and battery chemistry must be marked on the product. The carton carries the class 9 lithium battery label, the lithium battery handling label and the telephone number for additional information. For Europe the CE mark and the separate WEEE symbol go on the product or its packaging as the directive requires. We print all of this in your layout.

4. Market requirements

5. Timeline and cost drivers

Documents

UN38.3, MSDS and identification reports are already prepared for the models in this range and are issued with your quotation.

Production

Samples in 5–7 days. Mass production is scheduled after approval — battery supply is the main variable on large runs.

Freight

Class 9 surcharges, the state-of-charge handling and port regulations move the price more than distance does. Book early around peak season.

Buyer questions

Can portable power stations be shipped by air?
Only in limited cases. Standalone lithium batteries above 100 Wh are forbidden as air cargo and as air courier shipments; below 100 Wh they may travel under the applicable packing instruction with a state of charge of no more than 30% and cargo-aircraft-only marking. Power stations above 100 Wh — which is most of the range — move by sea.
Which UN number applies to my shipment?
UN3480 applies to lithium-ion batteries shipped on their own, which is the case for a power station sold as a battery product. UN3481 applies where batteries are contained in or packed with equipment. Your forwarder will declare the shipment according to how the goods are actually packed and sold.
What is the state-of-charge rule?
Lithium-ion cells and batteries must be offered for transport at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of rated capacity. Every unit we ship is discharged and verified before packing; this is also why a new station arrives partially charged.
Do I need a dangerous goods declaration?
Yes for sea freight. Lithium batteries are class 9 dangerous goods under the IMDG Code, so the booking needs a shipper's declaration for dangerous goods, the MSDS and the UN38.3 test summary, together with the correct class 9 labelling and marking on the cartons.
What markings must appear on the product or packaging?
The watt-hour rating, the battery chemistry, the warning text required by the destination market, the class 9 lithium battery label on the carton, and — for the EU — the CE mark and the separate WEEE symbol. We print them in the layout your market requires.
How long does delivery take?
Sea freight from Shenzhen or Ningbo is typically 25–40 days to Northern Europe, 20–35 days to the US west coast and 15–25 days to Australia, plus booking and inland legs. Air freight, where it is permitted, is 5–10 days door to door but is not available for the larger stations.
